Travel Image This year, 2008 and it is time to take a Christmas break. Every year I am working over Christmas and New Year and this year I am on holiday like any other office worker as the outlets are not open yet! So, where to go and Austria it is as I wanted a white Christmas, somewhere not too much flying time away and somewhere I had not been before. I finally left just before the New Year, landing in Vienna for a couple of days before heading up to Innsbruck, and Salzburg for a couple of nights each, then a day trip down to Graz before finishing in Vienna once more. The trip was economy as the price difference between economy and business class was about 500 percent higher and to my mind, this was just not justified for a little over five hour trip. The timing was good and while the weather was not that cold, just being minus 6 or 7, for some reason I was extremely cold on this trip, so while aspects were great, other parts just were not enjoyable. It is hard staying in a tropical climate and then traveling to a cold one for holidays, as you either weigh yourself down a lot with luggage and cold weather gear, or you try to balance it out so you can pick up a few souvenirs and such while you travel. I had some pretty good cold weather clothes, but obviously not good enough for this time of year. I stayed also in smaller hotels, but all were nice and pleasant, eating out in the local restaurants and bars and having a few good glasses of wine and beer to wash it all down with. Mainly sightseeing this trip, always with the camera and some great photos were taken. Austria looks a pretty place and I can see why it is a winter playground for many people. I saw my Christmas markets, what was left of them, even though I arrived in the country late and had many a glass of warm gluwein to try and get the blood moving. New Year was spent in Salzburg and while the night itself was quiet for me, I did wake up in the to find it snowing outside and so out with the camera I went! On top of the mountains and when it was actually snowing I was not cold, but it must have just been the wind factor that made it unpleasant, and it was also the same time that airports were being closed from Western Europe across as a cold front moved eastward. I left Austria just before it closed the airport there. Anyway, cold or not, it was a good trip, some great photos, I had Vienna schnitzel in Vienna and I went to a place I had wanted to go to for a while!
